The Cashew Gardens Community Recycling Programme is the
first Community based recycling programme in Trinidad and Tobago. The initiative was started in 2016 by the Community Council and children of Cashew Gardens. At this time the children were participating in a water quality testing activity with the Adopt a River Program and they would constantly complain about the garbage in the Caparo River which was predominantly plastic bottles. The Council and the Children therefore decided to conduct a river clean-up and community education campaign to teach the residents responsible waste management.
To date the program has grown exponentially and has even received support from the Green Fund Execution Unit to facilitate its expansion to include eight other communities in the area.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynZvIrBAW0o
